Why Businesses Choose Us for Java

We Inherit Code, Not Just Write It

Most of our custom Java development begins in a codebase someone else wrote, often on an unsupported JDK with a build nobody can reproduce. We reconstruct what it actually does from the code and the database, then change it without breaking the undocumented behaviour the business quietly depends on.

Boring Choices on Purpose

Spring Boot, PostgreSQL or Oracle, Kafka where it earns its place. Our Java development services favour libraries with long support horizons and large hiring pools, because a Java application usually outlives the team that wrote it and the fashionable framework it was tempting to use.

Performance Measured, Not Guessed

Our Java software development services cover JVM tuning, heap and garbage collection analysis, query profiling, and load testing against real traffic shapes. Java performance problems are almost never where people assume, which is why we profile before changing anything.

Handover Is Part of the Work

Our Java application development leaves readable code, current dependencies, tests that run, and documentation your own developers can follow. If you would struggle to hand the codebase to a new hire after we leave, we have not finished the job properly.

Java projects tend to sit close to money, records, or regulated processes, so our work runs inside a certified security and quality management system with background-checked engineers and traceable change control. That includes dependency and container scanning in the pipeline, secrets kept out of configuration files, PIPEDA-compliant handling for Canadian clients, and the audit evidence SOC 2, HIPAA, and ISO reviews ask for.

A Premier Java Development Company in Canada

Engineering leaders work with AppStudio because we are comfortable with software that already exists. Review boards including Clutch, DesignRush, and GoodFirms list us as a top rated Java web development company, and much of our Java work arrives by referral from clients whose systems we kept alive rather than replaced.

Our Java Development Process

Java has been declared obsolete roughly once every three years since 1998 and now runs a larger share of banking, insurance, logistics, and government systems than it ever has. The reason is unglamorous: the JVM is fast, the library ecosystem is deep, the language changes carefully, and you can still hire people who know it. As a Java development company, AppStudio works in Java because those properties matter more than novelty when software has to last.

Most of what our Java application development services are asked to do falls into three shapes. Build something new where reliability and integration matter more than speed to market. Extend a system that works but was not designed for what the business now needs. Or rescue an estate where the original team has gone, the dependencies are eight years old, and nobody is certain what would break.

The third is the most common and the most misdiagnosed. It usually arrives described as a rewrite, and a rewrite is usually the wrong answer. Replacing working software means rebuilding a decade of accumulated business rules that exist nowhere except in that code, which is why rewrites overrun so reliably. Choosing custom Java development over a full rewrite is usually the cheaper and safer path.

We read the code, run it, and profile the JVM and the database before proposing anything. The output is a written map of the system and an honest view of whether it needs tuning, extending, modernising, or genuinely replacing.
We agree the target: a supported JDK, the dependency upgrades that matter, the modules worth refactoring, and the integration boundaries that cannot move. Every decision ties back to a business outcome rather than a fashion.
Work happens in your repository in short increments, with tests added as we go, and the system stays live throughout. You can stop, ship, and see real numbers before funding the next phase.
JUnit and integration suites run in the pipeline, alongside dependency and container scanning, CVE patching, and the audit evidence SOC 2, HIPAA, and ISO reviews ask for. Security is designed in, not bolted on before go-live.
After go-live we keep the JDK and dependencies current, patch CVEs on a known scope, and stay available from business hours to always-on. The system keeps working long after we have left.

A Java Software Development Company Comfortable With Software That Already Exists

Plenty of firms will build you a new Java application. Far fewer will take on a codebase written by people who have left, running on a JDK that lost support years ago, with a build nobody can reproduce. That work is less photogenic and it is where most Java budgets actually go, so it is what we organised ourselves around.

Clients come to us under different labels, and the name, a Java development company, an agency, or a team, rarely predicts the work. What they share is a system that matters, a business that cannot pause while it is fixed, and a preference for hearing what the work will really cost. Whether you need one project delivered or a team working alongside your own, the starting point is the same conversation.

Java Development FAQs

We provide custom Java development, Java web application development, enterprise Java application development, Spring and Spring Boot engineering, J2EE and Jakarta EE modernisation, Java APIs and integration, intranet and extranet portals, Java cloud development, JVM performance tuning, and ongoing maintenance. Our Java application development services cover both new builds and existing systems, and the second is the larger share of our work. Java web application development services and custom Java application development company work often overlap on the same project, since extending a platform usually means building something new inside something old.
Cost scales with scope, so most projects fall between sixty thousand and four hundred thousand Canadian dollars depending on scope, integrations, and how much existing code is involved. Custom Java development services are quoted after a short discovery, because the honest answer depends almost entirely on what you are integrating with. Rates for senior Java engineers in Canada generally sit between a hundred and twenty and one hundred and ninety dollars an hour.
Timelines depend on scope: a focused Spring Boot service or internal application typically takes three to five months. An enterprise platform with multiple integrations runs six to twelve. Modernising an existing estate depends on its condition, though a first meaningful release usually lands within eight to ten weeks because we deliver incrementally rather than in one cutover.
Both descriptions fit, and the distinction people usually mean is mobile. As a Java development company we build server-side applications, web platforms, and enterprise systems. As a Java app development company we also build the mobile clients that sit on top, with Android in Java or Kotlin. Some clients search for a Java app development firm or a Java application development company and mean the same thing, so it is worth being specific about whether you need a mobile client, a web application, or both.
Enterprise here describes the constraints rather than the size of your organisation. A thirty-person insurance broker with policy data, an audit obligation, and four integrations has an enterprise Java problem. As an enterprise Java development company we take on that shape of work, and enterprise Java development services usually means transactions that cannot be lost, permissions that must be provable, and a system expected to run for years. A Java enterprise application development company is describing the same thing.
Yes, and it is a large part of our work. That means Spring Boot on the server with either a JavaScript front end in Angular or React, or server-rendered pages with Thymeleaf where a single-page application would be overkill. As a Java web application development company we take on both new platforms and the extension of existing ones, and Java web app development services are frequently how a client first engages us.
Yes, and it is one of the reasons clients come to us. J2EE became Java EE and then Jakarta EE, so a system described as J2EE is usually fifteen or more years old and running on an application server that has lost support. As a J2EE development company we handle those migrations incrementally, including the javax to jakarta namespace change, so the system stays live. Custom J2EE development on an existing estate is entirely feasible and often cheaper than the replacement being proposed, which is why a J2EE application development company is still a useful thing to be able to hire in 2026.
Yes. WebLogic, WebSphere, JBoss, and old Tomcat versions are all common starting points, and the destination is usually a supported Tomcat or an embedded server in Spring Boot. We move one module at a time behind a routing layer so both versions run in parallel during the transition. It takes longer than a single cutover and it does not require a weekend where the business holds its breath.
Modernise, in about four cases out of five. A working system encodes years of business rules that exist nowhere else, and a rewrite starts from the subset somebody remembers. Upgrading the JDK, replacing unmaintained libraries, adding tests, and refactoring the worst modules delivers most of the benefit at a fraction of the risk. We will tell you when a rewrite genuinely is the answer, which is usually when the architecture cannot support a requirement at all.
Spring and Spring Boot for most work, with Spring Security and Spring Data alongside. Hibernate for persistence, Quarkus where fast startup or a small memory footprint matters, and Thymeleaf or Vaadin for server-rendered interfaces. On existing systems we work with whatever is already there, including Struts and older Spring versions, because replacing a framework and adding a feature at the same time is how projects lose control.
Yes. As a Java cloud development company we containerise Java applications for AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, which is mostly a matter of getting configuration, secrets, and JVM sizing right. Default heap settings inside a container waste a surprising amount of money. Where cold start time matters we look at Quarkus or a GraalVM native image rather than assuming a standard JVM.
Yes. REST for most cases, GraphQL where clients need flexible queries, and gRPC where service-to-service latency matters. We also wrap legacy SOAP endpoints so new clients get a modern interface without the old system being touched. Our API development in Java page goes into more detail if that is your primary need.
A supported long-term release, which currently means Java 21 or Java 17. If you are on Java 8 or 11 you are on a version whose free support has ended or is ending, which is the most common serious risk we find in Java estates. The upgrade is usually less painful than teams expect and brings real performance improvements along with security updates.
Yes, on tiers from business hours to always on. Support covers dependency and JDK upgrades, CVE patching, performance monitoring, and small enhancements, with a named engineer who knows your codebase. This is deliberately unglamorous work and it is what keeps a Java application worth owning five years after launch.
Yes, and we recommend it when the original team has moved on. A two to three week review gives you a written assessment of code quality, dependency risk, security exposure, upgrade paths, and a costed roadmap. It is a fixed fee and it is yours to act on with us or with another firm.
Yes. Dedicated Java developers work inside your team and follow your process, and you interview every candidate first. If your need is primarily staffing rather than delivery, our hire Java developers page covers rates, vetting, and how the engagement works. Plenty of clients hire Java app developers for a build and keep one or two on afterwards for maintenance.
Our Java developers average eight years and the leads considerably more, which matters because most of our work involves reading code before writing any. Experience in enterprise Java is different from general programming experience: knowing how a connection pool behaves under load, or why a transaction boundary is in the wrong place, comes from having been on call for systems like yours.
You do, completely, from the first commit. Work happens in your repositories where possible, there is no proprietary framework of ours embedded in the result, and the licence position of every third-party dependency is documented. Ask any Java development company you shortlist the same question, because arrangements that keep you dependent are easier to enter than to leave.
This is a normal starting condition rather than an obstacle. We reconstruct the picture by reading the code, running it, examining the database, and interviewing whoever remains. The output is a written map of the system, which most clients tell us becomes their onboarding document. It is also the only responsible basis for estimating anything else.
Book a free consultation and tell us what you are running, what it needs to do, and what has already been tried. If existing software is involved, read-only access to the repository is worth more than any specification. We will come back with a straight view on whether it needs tuning, extending, modernising, or genuinely replacing.
